It all started, as many institutions in our modern world did, with a bunch of Star Wars-loving geeks

John Knoll, a supervisor at George Lucas' visual effects house, Industrial Light and Magic, was intrigued by an image-editing Mac app his academic brother Thomas was working on as a hobby, and started showing it around ILM. The computer graphics folks loved how it did most everything their high-end Pixar machines could do, but for a fraction of the price. It was used in the special effects for James Cameron's The Abyss

Turkish politicians brawl in parliament building over controversial bill

Turkish politicians apparently know how to pack a punch. Five members of parliament were injured after a brawl broke out in parliament in the early hours of Wednesday when opposition politicians tried to delay debating a controversial new security bill.

The piece of legislation has drawn criticism for expanding President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's ability to limit freedom of expression and squash dissent.

This year's Academy Award-nominated films were chock-full of intense dramas and twisted comedies, like Boyhood and Birdman. While these instant classics were satisfying in their own right, they also lacked a certain marshmallowy goodness only Peeps can provide.

When we aren't microwaving our favorite Easter treats into oblivion, we might as well dress them up in funny paper costumes and imagine them in some of the most preeminent movie roles of 2015.

The goofy Comedy Central show about best friends Abbi and Ilana is rife with observational comedy about the ups and downs of New York City life. But crammed in between the silly jokes are actual facts about a variety of topics

For example, when Ilana mentions that New York City water contains microscopic shrimp, she means it. And when Abbi spouts off random facts about Drew Barrymore, every single one checks out. They just want us to learn, for heaven's sake.

Delta apologizes for 9/11 remarks, which Emirates says caused 'great offense'

Delta Air Lines apologized Wednesday for CEO Richard Anderson's remarks about 9/11 on CNN in response to criticism from Gulf carriers

Anderson mentioned the terrorist attacks in reference to the U.S. airline industry's financial difficulties, noting that the hijackers came from the Arabian Peninsula, the source of the criticism.

"Richard was reacting to claims the gulf carriers have been making that U.S. airlines received subsidies in the form of payments from the U.S. government after 9/11 and the bankruptcy proceedings that resulted," Delta said in an apology. "He didn't mean to suggest the gulf carriers or their governments are linked to the 9/11 terrorists. We apologize if anyone was offended." Read more...

Among seven groups of 192 different breeds, the show floor was full of fascinating and passionate owners, handlers, fans, and dogs from around the world.

We got to hang out with two adorable Chesapeake Bay Retrievers named Goose and Cherry (and their owner and handler Tina Camp) as they went through their competition

The 20-month-old pups from Cape May, New Jersey are already show circuit veterans and standouts in their breed. But fame hasn't quite gone to their head yet — they love to play around as much as they love the spotlight of show floor. Read more...

Samsung buys Apple Pay competitor LoopPay

Samsung just made a major move in its bid for the company's own version of Apple Pay.

The South Korean-based company is acquiring the mobile payments platform and Apple Pay rival LoopPay, the two companies announced Wednesday.

Terms of the deal, first rumored back in December, were not disclosed. In a statement, Samsung said LoopPay's two founders will join the company, although the status of the rest of LoopPay's team is unclear.

"Our vision of inspiring consumers to transition from a physical wallet to a truly digital wallet will continue," LoopPay CEO and cofounder WIll Graylin said in a statement. "We look forward to working with Samsung to offer the world’s most secure and compelling mobile platform." Read more...

The new HTTP/2 spec ushers in hopes for a faster web

HTTP, or the Hypertext Transfer Protocol, is a central part of the World Wide Web. On Wednesday, Mark Nottingham, the chair of the IETF HTTP Working Group, announced that the HTTP/2 spec is now complete and approved.

This is a big deal because the last time the HTTP spec was updated was back in 1999. A lot has changed with the web over the last 16 years, and HTTP/2 promises to bring big changes and improvements to how the Internet operates.

As the HTTP/2 FAQ makes clear, HTTP 1.1 (the current iteration), is starting to show its age, especially now that webpages are more resource-intensive than ever before. As a result, there are changes in HTTP/2 that should make loading webpages faster. The biggest new feature is something called multiplexing, which will basically allow multiple HTTP requests to be delivered at the same time. Read more...

Anyone who knows me also knows that I have a huge sweet tooth. I always have. My friend and fellow graduate student Andrew is equally afflicted, and living in Hershey, Pennsylvania — the "Chocolate Capital of the World" — doesn't help either of us.

Dolly Parton's Dixie Stampede unveils $2.5-million redesign

Dolly Parton's Dixie Stampede, a dinner attraction in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, launched in 1988. This year, for its 28th season, the show has been completely revamped: Organizers spent $2.5 million on its largest-ever renovation since opening

“I want to dazzle our guests in 2015 with a completely new atmosphere,” Parton said of the show's renovation, which include new music and special effects, as well as interactive lighting that features 12.5 million LED bulbs.

Dixie Stampede's reopening this past weekend was met with record audiences, according to the attraction. Officials added extra shows over the weekend to accommodate all the guests. Read more...

Nicki Minaj says she is 'so sad' after tour manager stabbed to death

LOS ANGELES — Nicki Minaj is publicly mourning the death of her tour manager De'Von Pickett, who was fatally stabbed early Wednesday morning in Philadelphia

Philadelphia police officer Tanya Little confirmed to Mashable that two people were stabbed outside Che Bar and Grill at 2:35 a.m., local time. A 29-year-old victim, which Minaj said is Pickett, died after being stabbed multiple times in the torso. A 26-year-old, which Minaj said is fellow tour employee Eric Parker, was also stabbed in the altercation

The surviving victim was stabbed in the left arm and left side; he is in critical condition at Albert Einstein Medical Center. The police department has issued a "$20,000 reward for the arrest and conviction" of any suspects, Little said Read more...
