Competition in the airline industry has been heating up between legacy carriers in the United States and Europe and rapidly expanding Gulf carriers like Emirates and Etihad.

Leaders of U.S. carriers have said the Gulf carriers are benefiting greatly from their governments' financial support, while Gulf leaders have said that bankruptcy protection offers American carriers similar opportunities.
