KIEV, Ukraine — The heavy artillery fire that has ripped apart eastern Ukraine over the past 10 months and killed over 5,400 people fell almost silent early Sunday as a tenuous new cease-fire hammered out earlier this week in Minsk, Belarus came into effect at the stroke of midnight.



But it wasn't long before the two warring sides traded accusations of new attacks, threatening to undermine the fragile truce.


Ukrainian officials reported 10 attacks on their positions in the first hours of the truce. Valentyn Nalyvaichenko, head of the Security Service of Ukraine, said artillery salvoes were fired less than an hour into the cease-fire from an area under the control of Russian Cossacks. Read more...
